The ever-growing discipline
For some, gravel has always existed in one way or another, yet its presence has never been so relevant.
The Traka was born 6 years ago, providing Girona’s already well-established gravel paradise with an event in the renowned Gravel Earth Series. Its paths and trails, breathtaking landscapes, all-year-round nice weather, and the continuously expanding cycling culture around this place, predicted the success that was to come.
With each edition, this now internationally renowned event attracts a growing number of gravel enthusiasts every year. From the adventurous souls to the true explorers, and even those seeking a bit of speed; its five different route lengths cater to everyone, offering a personal challenge for each rider. Yet all of them share the same mantra: to respect others and to respect nature.
This year an unexpected factor came into play to spice things up a bit: the real Pachamama in her purest state. Mother Nature is as wild as she sets us free; and while the water shortage had been a real problem in the region months before, the days leading up to The Traka saw Girona experience unprecedented rain, leaving the playing field ready to become one of the most memorable to date.
The rain, more than welcome for the locals, unfortunately made the terrain almost impracticable for this year’s inaugural and new discipline: The Traka Adventure, 560km +10,000m elevation gain.
Isma López was moved from the 560 to the 360 and had to rearrange his setup to adapt it to the new circumstances.
After postponing the event and later being forced to cancel it, this year the challenge was not just for the participants, but also for the organization. In just 48 hours, they had to restructure and manage all the unforeseen issues so that the anticipated Traka 360 could successfully go ahead.
Mud and water were the menu awaiting the riders on Friday morning. With setups ranging from pure speed to comfort and stability, the Terra conquered the challenging terrain, adapting to the most demanding circumstances. Light and agile, stiff and aerodynamic, truly our best buddy out there!
It is often said that after the storm comes the calm… Well, this time it might not have been quite like that. The sun was indeed shining the next day for the 200, but “calm” might not be the most appropriate word for what was experienced on Saturday morning. Pro athletes within and beyond this discipline are starting to become regulars at these types of events, elevating the pace exponentially. Yet our Terra does enjoy some speed from time to time. Just check this rocket from Lukas Baum.
Finally, to wrap up one of the most memorable and epic editions of The Traka, on Sunday, the shorter distances of 50km and 100km took place. The terrain was considerably drier, and it was a beautiful day to enjoy both on and off the bike, as the atmosphere was incredible, thanks to the welcoming community surrounding this event.
And that is pretty much the deal! Whether as a challenge or an escape, a dream or a dare, The Traka is solidifying as a must-do on every gravel lover’s list, once again highlighting the plurality and diversity that this discipline represents.
It was a rollercoaster of emotions: muddy plains, steep climbs, hot, cold, moments of triumph, and moments of struggle. It was my first The Traka adventure, and I am really satisfied that I completed it within the time I had set for myself, taking home so much experience!” Erika Bianchi.) Photo credits @andrea_pialo
