Lotto–Intermarché: Ambition Under the Highest Demands
The WorldTour begins long before race day. To aspire to win here is to embrace a different kind of rigor which is shown in the way preparation is done, how decisions are made and how every step is measured with strict precision. It is an exposed, demanding environment that requires rapid responses and the ability to sustain ambition under constant pressure. It is for that very reason that WorldTour is the place to be when you really want to win.
The WorldTour: demanding territory
There comes a moment in any sporting project when excellence is no longer enough.
The partnership between Lotto and Intermarché moves beyond rhetoric and into the calendar, logistics and day-to-day demands. For the team, it means a stronger structure and a leap in ambition. For Orbea, it means something more specific: returning to the WorldTour after a decade away, fully aware of the unique way it tests riders, mechanics, engineers and partners.
From the inside, the step up is felt immediately, and not just in race pace, but in every surrounding. At the highest level, there is little room for improvisation; every technical decision, every adjustment, every delay is magnified. The calendar is tougher, exposure is greater and responsiveness becomes just as important as pure performance.
This challenge is nothing new for us. We’ve spent two seasons working with Lotto, and the dynamics already run like clockwork. Integrating into a team at the level of the former Lotto-Dstny was a challenge but, even then, our roadmap was clear: to return to the WorldTour. That goal forced us—and continues to force us every day—to significantly improve our processes in a world where our many decades of experience already gave us a certain edge.
Reaching this milestone doesn’t change our commitment.
“From Orbea’s side we will continue giving our best: in product development and also in communication and the value that we are adding to this team,” explains Iñaki Ucin, Sports Marketing Manager at Orbea.
Raising the bar
For us at Orbea, the union of Lotto and Intermarché acts as an accelerator. After a decade without a direct presence in the WorldTour, competing in the most demanding calendar in the world means subjecting every development to constant pressure. More race days, more types of terrain, more extreme scenarios, and also, more information. Returning to the WorldTour speeds up internal processes and forces us to listen attentively to those on the bike and to the staff around them.
Our role is clearly defined. It’s not about supplying equipment and stepping out of the picture; it’s about being inside the project, analyzing, adjusting and evolving alongside the team. The obsession is the same as ever: to improve in the most demanding environment possible, accepting that the bicycle is an ongoing conversation between those who design it and those who push it to the limit.
“There is no finish line in performance and there is no finish line in R&D,” reminds Aike Visbeek, Performance Manager at Lotto–Intermarché.
A new chapter
The tension is in the air. It is subtle, the nervous anticipation of those eager for the moment to arrive, yet wishing time would stretch just a little longer. As the start line gets closer, the entire team is focused on completing the preparation. The goals are highly ambitious; many dates are marked on the calendar, many victories in sight. All eyes are on the enormous potential of this new-old structure, and the external pressure is undeniable—just as strong as the excitement felt within. Everyone involved in this project knows that it can become an unstoppable force in the years to come.
“Coming back to the WorldTour is also demanding for everybody, for the staff, for the riders, also for our partners. We have a very performant bike with Orbea. We want to get higher and higher: the sky is the limit. We have ambition with the project.”
Kurt Van de Wouwer, Sports Director
The WorldTour is once again the stage; for the team, for us and for everyone involved in this project. This is the beginning of a new chapter, not a finish line. There is no better place to grow than here, where everything matters.
