Pedaling through vineyards
No timers, elbowing or nerves. 1,500 people pedaled at a relaxed pace, free from traffic, along gravel trails winding through vineyards, with the limestone rock of the Sierra Cantabria as a backdrop. It was a unique joy to share a landscape rich in beauty and culture on a special day of cycling, rain or shine, cold or not.
The Orbea Gravel Rioja Alavesa is simply this: a celebration of the cycling community and a perfect getaway for the people at Orbea. It’s a chance to step away from the assembly line, the offices, the workshops and labs to enjoy cycling, support the aid stations, rally people at the start or contribute wherever we’re needed. As cooperative members, Orbea feels like our own, but we know we are part of a much larger cycling community, united by our shared passion for pedaling.
"Participating in the Orbea Gravel Rioja Alavesa like this is incredible. For me, it's what team building is meant to be, meeting and connecting with the other volunteers who also work in other departments at Orbea."
– said event volunteer Chen Ding.
In this exemplary Gravel event, it is not about going fast but about having fun with friends and newcomers alike… savoring landscapes, taking a moment at each aid station or contemplating the architecture of the best local wineries.
"The best thing about this event is that it's very accessible: it doesn't matter what shape you're in or what type of terrain you usually ride. It allows you to share the gravel trails with different cyclists and you get to know many people."
– explained Pedro Dias, who participated in this third edition.
We chose Rioja Alavesa to host this gathering of cycling enthusiasts because of its unmatched terrain, rolling hills and perfect gravel tracks. Additionally, the vineyards here embody a balance of tradition and innovation, with a deep respect for the land and craftsmanship that produces the best wines. This philosophy of passionate, quality work aligns with the values we uphold at Orbea.
"The Orbea Gravel Rioja Alavesa is a completely unique event. Beyond cycling, this event is a social gathering. It's the perfect space to enjoy the full range of activities offered: winery visits, discussions, music, food, tents with all kinds of bike-related products…"
– said Lide Ugarte, a second-year participant.
Last year, 800 participants registered; this year, that number doubled.
"The combination of wine and bikes draws a lot of attention, and since this event coincides with the vineyards' fall colors and a wide variety of activities, more and more people are joining in."
– Chen told us. We hope to continue growing, improving and sharing our essence: a love for two wheels.
